                Group Tours ($25/person)

Group and school visitors enjoy everything that a drop in visitor would enjoy, plus: a comprehensive tour of the museum, including what goes on behind the scenes; lunch, afternoon tea, or light refreshments; and a live jazz performance by a jazz band (Feb thru Oct). Our minimum group size is 20 with a maximum of 40.

Members and friends are welcome to “tag along” with group tours, for the same per-head charge. Check out our calendar for upcoming group tours. Tours can be scheduled by prior arrangement between 10:00 am – 4:00 pm, or evenings, any day except Saturday and public holidays. Advance booking is essential.

To book a group tour, contact Joy Farnan on 9800 5535 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Fridays between 10:00 and 3:00, or email tours@

                Our Story

An interview with our Collections Manager, Mel Blachford, recorded on Saturday May 21, 2016, at the 2016 Stonnington Jazz Festival.

The ABC “Swing Show” with Graeme Bell – 1948
Alan Saunders, who played saxophone and violin in the ABC Dance Band from 1936 to 1968, also ran a weekly jazz program for several years in the 1940s called “The Swing Show”. The Jazz Museum has one of these programs from 1948 (which could be the only one in existence). It features the Graeme Bell band, but unfortunately parts of the acetate disc are so badly damaged that some of the recording had to be edited out and other parts are too worn to be satisfactorily restored. Nevertheless, we present this program as is which may never have been heard since its original broadcast.
When we were still known as the Victorian Jazz Archive one of our Sound Engineers, Ken Simpson-Bull, compiled an overview of our collection of rare Jazzart-label recordings. Click below to enjoy it.

                Last Consignment
It’s February 1940, and the Australian government has introduced a ban on the importation of records. Radio jazz program “Swing Night” writer Bill Miller is able to put together a program based on the last records to get into the country prior to the ban. More details here.
                Dr Ray Marginson Interview
AJM member Ken Simpson-Bull’s interview with Dr Ray Marginson, November 2010
Ray talks about the beginnings of the Museum and the work involved that creation.
